Media release: Laurium Capital listing adds to growth of JSE’s Actively Managed ETF market

Laurium Capital

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) today welcomed the listing of the Laurium Flexible Prescient Feeder Actively Managed Exchange Traded Funds (AMETF) on its Main Board, further expanding a segment that has grown steadily since the JSE introduced AMETFs to the South African market in 2023.

Trading under the code LAUFFE, the listing is Laurium Capital’s first AMETF. It provides listed access to the Laurium Flexible Prescient Fund, an active multi-asset strategy launched in February 2013. Rather than creating a new strategy specifically for the exchange-traded market, Laurium Capital has made its existing investment approach available through a JSE-listed structure.

The underlying Laurium Flexible Prescient Fund invests across local and foreign equities, bonds, money market instruments and property, with the flexibility to adjust its asset allocation as opportunities change. The strategy targets long-term capital growth and returns in excess of CPI plus 5% per annum over rolling three-year periods.

“This launch is about making an established Laurium investment strategy available to investors in a more accessible way,” says Brian Thomas, CEO and spokesperson for Laurium Capital. “The investment strategy has not changed. What has changed is how investors can access it.”

Adèle Hattingh, Specialist Securities Manager at the JSE, said: “The continued growth of the AMETF market reflects increasingly sophisticated investor demand for greater choice and diversification. Laurium’s listing adds to this growing market and broadens the range of active strategies available to investors. The JSE remains focused on enabling product innovation that responds to evolving investor needs, while providing transparent, regulated and tradable access to a wider range of investment opportunities.”

The development of AMETFs forms part of the JSE’s broader focus on product innovation and expanding investor choice. The exchange introduced AMETFs through amendments to its Listings Requirements, enabling issuers to bring actively managed strategies to market in the ETF structure. Since then, the market has broadened to include income, multi-asset, sustainability, artificial intelligence and other specialised exposures, giving investors more choice in how they construct diversified portfolios.

The total number of ETFs listed on the JSE is 143 with a combined market capitalisation exceeding R 274 billion.
